I Stay, I Go

5th June 2002

9:03am: My lama once gave a very mind-opening talk about anger. He explained that there are only 3 things that cause anger:

We are not getting what we want.
We are getting what we don't want.
We got something we wanted and it was taken away, broken, lost, changed, what have you.

All of these reasons make it clear that we are the ones responsible for perpetuating anger and NOT some outside person, situation, force.

If we let go of our desire to have things any other way than the way they are RIGHT NOW, we will no longer suffer.

In other words, resistance is hell.

I find this realization quite liberating.

It's all up to me.
12:29pm: We began as a mineral.
We emerged into plant life
and into the animal state,
and then into being human,
and always we have forgotten our former states,
except in early spring when we slightly recall
being green again.

That's how a young person turns
towards a teacher. That's how a baby leans
toward the breast, without knowing the secret
of its desire, yet turning instinctively.

Humankind is being led along an evolving course,
through this migration of intelligences,
and though we seem to be sleeping,
there is an inner wakefulness
that directs the dream,

and that will eventually startle us back
to the truth of who we are.

God, I hope so.
